The Christmas wish tree is made up of the dreams and wishes of children in shelters and substitute homes, sent to Santa Clause. To make sure that these do not just remain dreams, pick a gift from the Christmas tree and make a donation to the best of your ability.

You should know how to read drowning hazards

It was the sixth year in row that Tallink Spa & Conference Hotel invited children in welfare institutions to celebrate their birthday with them. There were children from safe houses all over Estonia – Viljandi, Tartu, Ida-Viru County, Tallinn and Harju County – a total of 170 guests.

This year the topic of the swimming party at the end of spring holidays was water safety and introducing the basics of water safety through games. All this was told to the children by the volunteers of the water group of the non-profit organisation Vabatahtlik Reservpäästerühm. The children learned about rescue equipment – life jacket, casting line, life belt, etc.

During the swimming day children found practicing using of casting the line most entertaining and the most important thought that they remembered from that day was that upon rescuing a drowning friend one should always hand an object (stick, towel, etc.) so that the person drowning does not pull the person rescuing into the water and the worst scenario is that there would be two people needing help.

The swimming courses were attended on a volunteer basis also by players of the Estonian Women’s Basketball League from clubs such as Eclex, Audentese SG/Noortekoondis, Tallinn University and AmEst Rapla.

A lot of accidents in water would never happen if children and we as adults knew the basics of water safety, and that is what we wish to teach to staff at shelters and to children staying there. Under the leadership of the Fund, water safety training for staff at safe houses and substitute homes will begin already in May, to ensure that the enjoyment of summer fun is safe for all children in substitute care.
