Preparatory Training for Future Tartu Ski Marathon Champions

The two-month charity campaign ‘Skis for Shelter Children’ of the SEB Charity Fund, which raised 29,430 euros, ended in January. During the campaign, 6444 people donated to shelters and enriched the lives of children living there.

For the campaign’s final event, the SEB Charity Fund organised a great ski sports day for children living in shelters at Nõmme Sports Centre in Tallinn. Over a hundred children from nine different shelters in Estonia took part. At the event, a hundred complete sets of skis – skis, poles, bindings and boots – purchased from donations collected during the campaign were handed over to the shelters.

At the sports day, a hundred pairs of skis were waiting in a snowdrift and although this year the skis will not be used to compete in the Tartu Ski Marathon, they will definitely help the children come to love sports. With the help of donators and contributors we are able to impart the kind of positive energy drawn only from sports to children who otherwise would never have such a chance. On 19 February, children from shelters will compete in the mini-marathon of the Tartu Ski Marathon, using their brand new skis.

At the sports day, the children had lots of fun in the snow and received skiing tips from Paavo Raudsepp, a former skier who now works as a coach at Kõrvemaa Ski Centre, and Veikko Täär, an actor and the most diligent ski student of Raul Olle. Also, a support team member taught the children how to wax and take care of their skis and fix their bindings. Children living with their families learnt all of this from their relatives during weekend ski trips.

Thanks to the hundred new sets of skis bought using the donations, the children can now fully enjoy the winter ahead. Donations enable children living in shelters to engage in leisure activities and hobbies: these funds are used to pay for music and art classes, to visit sports events, to go to the cinema and theatre and to buy the resources needed to develop their manual skills.

With the help of our generous regular contributors children without parental care can also enjoy all of this, which for other children is an ordinary and natural part of their childhood – and not just at Christmas time, but all year round.

A big thank you to all of the generous donators!
