Fiddler on the Roof – like an illustrated history class

Youths and foster parents from shelters and substitute homes all across Estonia went to see the musical Fiddler on the Roof, at the Estonian National Opera, a day before the Day of Restoration of Independence. Those who were interested also toured the backstage world of the theatre and many families got to enjoy a dim summer night in Tallinn.

Visiting the Estonian National Opera is always a special event! Therefore, everyone was looking forward with great anticipation to theatre day. Since Fiddler on the Roof is not a children's musical and it has a structure that is quite a complex, this time only older children visited the theatre.

Since this play tells the story of one (big) family, the action happening on the stage was well understood by the children. The beautiful songs moved their hearts and touched their souls, the spirited dance made them cheer – there were a lot of emotions, a lot of fun and, at times, some sadness. But that is the life of a family!

The performance made the children think differently and they found out a lot about old traditions. The youths anxiously engaged in a discussion about how things could have once been this way, with young people not being able to choose a partner for themselves. The entire story was like an illustrated history class. In addition to normal textbook knowledge, one could see the attire of the era, customs, beliefs, and dances on the theatre stage and get an idea of the entire environment.
